Academic Assessments
At Norwood Primary School, assessment is an integral part of ensuring high-quality learning and progress for every student. Guided by the Department for Education’s Strategy for Public Education, purpose-driven and data-informed, our teachers use a range of assessment types throughout the academic year. This includes both formative assessments (ongoing checks for understanding and progress) and summative assessments (evaluations of learning at set points).
In addition to ongoing classroom-based assessments, students in particular year levels participate in state and/or nation-wide assessments, such as:
- NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) in Years 3 & 5
- PAT (Progressive Achievement Tests) in Years 1-6 for Reading and Mathematics
- Mid-year and end-of-year academic reports
- Year 1 Phonics Screening Check
- Year 1 Numeracy Check
- Phonemic Awareness Screening and Monitoring in Reception
- LEAP Levelling for EALD (English as an Additional Language or Dialect) students in Rec-Year 6
- Oral Reading Fluency in years 1-6
- Ongoing spelling progress monitoring in Rec-Year 6
- Brightpath Writing Tool in Rec-Year 6
These assessments help staff monitor progress, inform teaching, and support each student’s development. We are committed to providing families with regular updates on student achievement and growth.
Twice a year, at the end of Term 1 and the beginning of Term 3, families are invited to participate in learning conversations with teachers. These meetings provide an opportunity to discuss student learning, celebrate successes, and set goals for further growth.
